about

The Taxter Factor is a snapshot into the summer of 2020. We were all sent home from our respective schools early because of the Coronavirus pandemic. For some time we had no gigs and nowhere to play. In past summers I had played daily 6 AM sets for tips at various train stops on the Hudson line with David or Ethan, but this year no one was commuting to the city.

When May came along, we realized that we could play music on my family’s back patio as long as we followed social distancing and mask rules. We were doing that multiple times a week, in the mornings before going to work or after in the evenings. My patio became a sanctuary for musicians. Neighbors would come by to listen and sit spaced out in the grass. We were bringing people together in a time when it felt like the community was outlawed.

The Taxter Factor is a look into one of these patio sessions. In August, David was getting ready to go back to school and we had played so much, we decided we wanted to record something. We called up Ethan and he brought all the recording gear right to the patio. In 2 sessions, we recorded 3 original tunes and 4 standards. We dealt with some rain on the first day and the second was 90 degrees and sunny. We didn’t have the luxury of a studio but the music we made is at the very least honest.

Thank you to my family for allowing this sanctuary to form in their backyard and supporting the music. Thanks to all of the people were integral parts of these patio sessions, including Will Buckser-Schulz, Jason Arkins, Raphael Silverman, John Sneider, Graciliano Zambonin, Harry Donis, Mike Roth, Hiroshi Yamazaki and many more. Thank you to Peter, Ethan F, Marcello, and Coby for giving so much to these recordings and being wonderful people to make music with. Lastly, a special thank you to my day one musical brothers, Ethan W and David, who have been such a big part of my musical and personal development. Without all of these great people, there is no Taxter Factor.

We give thanks to all those who dedicated their lives to developing this music that we are so fortunate to play. We hope you enjoy our recordings and consider making a donation if you are able. All proceeds from this project will go to BLM and the NAACP.

With Love and Gratitude,

Miles
